December '98:   the establishment of the new dedicated seismic Lab.
at Geophysical Inst. of N.A.S.U. - KIEV -

  Going on into our Infrastructural Action, the second seismic Lab. was installed in winter '98, at Geophysical Institute (IGPH) of the Ukrainian National Academy of  Sciences (NASU). When the Milan Partners went there in December 8-18, 1998, the new Lab. was nearly complete. The only missing components were the A0 scanner (by OCÈ) and the special Russian software DGS (by Synapse Company, the same as Moscow Lab. at Spetsgeofizika). Of course, in this time the new KIEV-INTAS LAB. is still under construction, and the machines are under testing.
Before this, and because of the local special economical situation, a long searching time was previously spent by our local Partner V.Geyko in order to find the best prices for the several instrumentation planned.  In one of the two available offices of the Geyko's team (the seismic Tomography research Group), the three work-places have been created and connected as already planned, with only a few technical problems. Moreover some additional works were done, in order to protect the goods, like the local electrical power increasing and filtering, and strong window and door grating. All the local staff  involved in our Intas project was very aware of the new informatic tools, and was grateful to Intas for such chance to update their hardware possibilities (and in fact the good-bye party was excellent... ).

The following are the main updating regarding the KIEV Intas-Lab. (some of them are Kiev slow links: for them, please, be patient...)

  1. the IGPH structure (link at Institute's Home-Page in Kiev, very new...); our local Partner, Dr. V.Geyko, is the Chief of the ' Seismic Tomography Lab.  (which is one of the six Units of the 'Theoretical Problems of Applied Geophysics' Division);
  2. about our new Intas seismic Lab.: the Hardware, including the several Providers info, and its raw structure; no news on the Software, which will be the famous 'DSG' already chosed by the other Moscow Partner, produced by 'Synapse' Company, and which will be available in Kiev in January'98;
  3. the local old DSS paper-data: its amount, the priority of processing scheme, maps, and other;
  4. networking and communications news;
  5. after this first technological set up, what could be a possible future prosecution into international collaboration and funds access?
  6. a short visit to their seismic E-lab (seeing some instrumentation).
We are very near to the final expiry date of our Infra-structural Action (shifted to next February 28, 1999). So, in the next weeks other news will be available as soon as the establisment of this dedicated EDP will be finished and the production step will be reached.
