During our stay in Moscow, we had the pleasure to visit also this State
research enterprise: the GEON Centre, another geophysical research Institute
for deep seismic studies. We'd been introduced to the General Director,
Dr. L.N. Solodilov, by the kind local Europrobe's
Secretary Mrs N. Timofeeva. Dr. Solodilov explained to us the main
research lines of Geon and its availability to Western collaborations.
This way we were surprise to know the incredible GEON seismic resources,
like:
more than 120,000 km of DSS regional profiles across all the Country;
unique seismic records of peace nuclear explosions (mostly on old papers);
specialised deep seismic data bank.
So, we think that these two geophysical Centres, each with their own well
defined Data Sets (Geon having mostly continental profiles, obtained by
peace nuclear explosions; Spetsgeofizika using the 'normal' TNT seismic
data), and developing their possible contacts and collaborations,
will both contribute to the global new Russian success into the modern
seismic data processing scientific area.
Another area of studies of GEON Centre is the hazard and seismic
risk, by means research into the following:
identification of regional seismicity criteria;
seismotectonic zoning of the territories;
forecast of anomalous geodynamic phenomena.
Finally, the GEON Centre produces a new line of digital portable seismic
recorders: starting with model ALFA
(designed and produced with LOGIS and NIIP Companies).
